George Wyllie’s iconic work included pieces like the life-size Straw Locomotive, which was set alight after hanging from Glasgow’s Finnieston Crane for six weeks in 1987 and his Paper Boat sculpture, which sailed from the Clyde and on to New York’s Hudson’s River in 1989.

George’s concern for the industrial demise of his home town was just one of a whole range of issues he raised through his art during his lifetime.

George, who died in 2012, also had a strong environmental conscience before the term ‘climate change’ had even been coined. This led to the creation of his Original Earth Guarantee in 1982. It was made for his multi-award winning play, A Day Down a Goldmine.

The print, stamped with George’s playful nature, mimics an official legal document but sets out a number of dire warnings about the future of the planet. The last line reads: “..if the terms of this Guarantee are not complied with, a WARNING is hereby given that the Guarantee, AND the product known as ‘Earth’, will be rendered VOID.

Signed by ‘The Managing Director of Universal Creations, George’s message is particularly relevant at a time when the COVID-19 lockdown is highlighting mankind’s detrimental impact upon the planet and the benefits of reduced human activity on the environment.

As a young sailor in the Royal Navy, Wyllie witnessed first-hand the devastation of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1946. Towards the end of his life, his artistic output focused on how the earth could regain its equilibrium.

Earth Day (22nd April) marks the anniversary of the birth of the environmental movement and to mark the occasion the Wyllie family has decided to make George’s Original Earth Guarantee available to the public.

Priced at £30 each, a donation from sales will go directly to Keep Scotland Beautiful, a Scottish charity that’s a key partner for Earth Day Network, which coordinates the annual Earth Day.

Louise Wyllie, George’s elder daughter, explained: “My father was always concerned about the way in which the earth was at risk from climate change brought about by humanity. It was a key driver behind a lot of his late work in particular. Dad was always ahead of his time and this particular piece of work resonates now, more than ever.

“He would have been delighted that young people are leading the campaign to preserve the planet.  The Original Earth Guarantee stresses the Earth has been ‘made from the best materials available.’  It’s our duty to look after it. Every household should have an Original Earth Guarantee as a reminder!”
